Another TMC leader in custody, Nandigram’s Shamsul Islam arrested in bombing probe

Shamsul Islam, the Public Health Karmadhyaksha of the Purba Medinipur Zilla Parishad and a Trinamool Congress leader from Nandigram, was arrested on Thursday night in connection with a bombing case under investigation. Investigators had been searching for him for several months before conducting an operation at his residence in Daudpur and taking him into custody. He is expected to be produced before court as the investigation continues.

The arrest is linked to allegations of bomb attacks during the Tamluk-Ghatal Central Cooperative Bank election. According to investigators, extensive bomb throwing was reported outside Didaruddin High School in Nandigram on polling day. Several BJP leaders and workers were reportedly injured during the incident, leading to tension in the area. The seriousness of the allegations later resulted in the case being taken up for further investigation.

Investigators stated that Shamsul Islam had been under scrutiny for a considerable period in connection with the case. Despite repeated efforts, authorities were initially unable to trace him. Acting on specific information, officials carried out a search operation on Thursday and arrested him later that night. Investigators believe questioning him may help identify other individuals allegedly connected to the incident.

A separate bomb-related case involving Shamsul Islam has also been under investigation. The case originated from an explosion at his residence in April. According to information gathered during the investigation, a polythene-wrapped packet kept beneath a staircase exploded after being moved. Family members reportedly stated that his son was injured in the blast. Subsequent searches allegedly led to the recovery of several live crude bombs from the premises.

Following changes in the state administration, investigators intensified efforts in multiple bomb-related cases and launched renewed searches for suspects. Police officials confirmed that Shamsul Islam was arrested in connection with an ongoing bomb explosion investigation and that further inquiries are continuing. Local party leaders had not publicly commented on the arrest at the time of reporting.
